Seminole Tribe of Florida Donates Chickee at Fort King National Historic Landmark

OCALA, Fla. (Sept. 14, 2021) – The City of Ocala Recreation and Parks department, in partnership with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, announces the addition of an authentic Chickee at the Fort King National Historic Landmark, 3925 E Fort King St. Construction of the Chickee began this week with an expected completion date of Friday, Sept. 17, weather permitting.  A representative of the tribe will be available to speak to the public and media on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 3 p.m.

A Chickee is a thatched-roof shelter with open sides and originated within the Seminole tribe.  The 20x40 foot structure is being donated to Fort King and will be used as an outdoor classroom and for future events, such as the Festival at Fort King, and additional historical programming.

This park is free and open to the public.

WHEN:  Wednesday, Sept. 15, 3 p.m.

WHERE:  Fort King National Historic Landmark, 3925 E Fort King St.
