Post Date:06/27/2024 12:25 PM

OCALA, Fla. (June 27, 2024) – The City of Ocala is hosting two art exhibitions, each offering unique perspectives and artistic expressions. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.

  • Spiky Truths, Sweet Solutions: Pineapples Allegories for Healing Justice by April Fitzpatrick will be on display at the Mary Sue Rich Community Center at Reed Place (1821 NW 21st Ave.) starting June 28 and will be available until Dec. 2.

This collection of multi-media artworks comes from Fitzpatrick’s recent artist residency in South Carolina. Using color, textures, composition, and pineapple, Fitzpatrick addresses the consequences and traumas of slavery and the stress caused by inequity and racial disparities within the healthcare system.

“My work builds a community that uses art as a catalyst for therapy, empathy, and awareness,” Fitzpatrick said. “I take viewers on a journey from pain into purpose.”

  • Paint Meets Dirt by Janas Smith Durkee will be on display at the Ocala International Airport (1770 SW 60th Ave., Suite 600) starting July 3 and will be available until Dec. 9.

This exhibit features 14 oil paintings that incorporate both Indiana and Florida landscapes from the past and present. Durkee’s impressionistic style depicts quiet towns, classic cars, and farm animals.

Since moving to Orlando, Durkee has been inspired by Central Florida’s landscape, which she describes as “harsh yet inviting.”
