City of Ocala Recognizes 'Fix a Leak' Week

Post Date:03/19/2024 11:46 AM

OCALA, Fla. (March 19, 2024) – The City of Ocala Water Resources Department recognizes ‘Fix a Leak’ week, March 18-24. Household water leaks waste nearly one trillion gallons of water nationwide each year.  During this week, customers are encouraged to check their residence for leaks that may go unnoticed and increase water bills.

To check for leaks, use these three simple steps:

  1. Sign Up for EyeOnWater®

City of Ocala customers are urged to sign up for a free EyeOnWater® account at https://eyeonwater.com/signup to receive potential leak notifications. If a household has not integrated into EyeOnWater®, look at current and past utility bills to see if there are spikes in use or unusually high bills during times of low water use, as these may be signs of a leak.

  2. Look and Listen

Look for pooling water underneath appliances and pipe connections. Listen for running water after flushing toilets and drips after using faucets or showerheads. If a toilet leak is suspected, place several drops of food coloring in the tank of the toilet, wait 10 minutes to see if the color appears in the bowl. If it does, the toilet likely has a leak, and the flapper may need to be replaced.

  3. Act Quickly

If a leak is present, act quickly. Common leaks only take minutes to fix and can save customers about 10 percent on their water bills, depending on the size of the leak.

For more information, please call the City of Ocala Water Resources Department at 352-351-6772 or visit EyeOnWater® | City of Ocala (ocalafl.gov) to sign up for a free EyeOnWater® account today.
