OCALA, Fla. (Nov. 21, 2023) – The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) recently recognized Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) with a “Building Strong Communities” award for making valuable investments that enhance the quality of life in its community, beyond efficient delivery of affordable, reliable and clean energy.

FMEA recognized public power utilities for programs and projects that provide community education, collect charitable donations, improve the environment, and other special programs that strengthen the communities in which they serve.

During Fiscal Year 2022-23, OEU proudly assisted civic groups and participated in community events reaching 147,822 customers. In addition to community outreach, city rebates provided a cost savings of $63,363 to residents. To support the energy-saving effects of trees, 300 saplings were given away encouraging residents to reduce heat near homes and buildings. OEU continues to support the community for which they serve.

“For the people who work for Florida’s public power utilities, it is more than just a job. It is a way for them to give back to their communities and an opportunity to strengthen the communities that they also live in,” said Amy Zubaly, FMEA Executive Director. “Congratulations to each of the utilities honored today, including OEU, and many thanks to the employees who have made this recognition possible.”

OEU was announced as an award recipient on November 7 at the FMEA Energy Connections Conference and Trade Show in Orlando. They join 19 other community-owned Florida public power communities in receiving this award.

For 125 years, OEU has made it possible for residents of Ocala to own and control its energy future while receiving affordable, reliable and environmentally responsible power.
